IPTAAS

IPTAAS provides financial assistance from the NSW Government towards your travel and accommodation costs when you need to travel long distances for specialised health treatment that is not available locally.

The way you log in to IPTAAS Online has changed.

From 12 June 2026, our online portal is now easier to use. A Digital ID or multi-factor authentication (MFA) is now also required for all accounts. For more information, please visit What has changed?.

Who can apply

To be eligible for IPTAAS, you must:

  • be a resident of NSW including Lord Howe Island
  • be enrolled with Medicare
  • not be receiving, or eligible for, financial assistance for travel and accommodation from third party insurance or other Australian government services
  • receive treatment at the nearest approved health service
  • travel from their residence for treatment at least 100km (one way), or at least 200km in a week by making multiple trips to and from the same specialist or highly specialised health service

What payment can you get

You may receive payments for the following:

  • private vehicle travel
  • public transport (trains, buses, and ferries)
  • taxis (including ride sharing like Uber)
  • air travel (in special circumstances)
  • accommodation.

Apply online

Applying online is the easiest and fastest way to submit an application, approved applications will be paid straight into your nominated bank account.

How to Apply online

Register for our online system

  • If you are new applying online, you will need to create your account before you can apply.
  • A Digital ID or multi-factor authentication (MFA) is now required for all accounts.
  • Applying online will allow you to save time and manage your stored information for future applications.

Before you get started, you will need:

  • your referring health professional details
  • your health service appointment information, including provider code details
  • your Medicare card details
  • your payment details
  • and copies of your travel and accommodation receipts.

Submit an application:

  • log in
  • enter the required information
  • upload your travel and accommodation receipts
  • submit your application.

Apply by paper form

If you can’t apply online, you can print and complete a paper form.

  • Check to see what IPTAAS forms you should be using
  • Download and print relevant form

2. Complete the form

Make sure you include:

  • treatment, travel, and accommodation details
  • bank account details
  • if you need to stay more than two nights before or after your treatment, your specialist or health service will need to sign the declaration on the form
  • your signature.

You can submit your form with any travel and accommodation invoices to your local IPTAAS office or email us at iptaas@health.nsw.gov.au.

The IPTAAS team will assess your application and may contact you for more information.

Applications must be submitted within 12 months of your hospitalisation discharge or appointment end date.

IPTAAS requires a new application form to be completed each time you visit a new specialist or specialised health service.
